ESS - FAQ

General Questions

Q1: What is ESET Smart Security?
A1: ESET Smart Security is ESET's new security offering. It combines the next generation of ESET's anti-virus engine with a personal firewall and anti-spam.

Q2: How do I obtain a copy of ESET Smart Security?
A2: Sign-up information and download links are available at http://www.eset.com/beta/.

Q3: Why do I have to fill out a form to download the beta?
A3: You do not have to fill out the form to download the beta, however, if you do we will be able to contact you via email during the beta test cycle to announce new releases or provide other urgent information.

Q4: How many beta test releases will there be?
A4: ESET does not have a public schedule for when new beta test builds will be released. New beta test builds will be released in response to feedback from bug reports and feature requests as well as to add additional functionality to the software.

Q5: How long will the beta test program run for?
A5: The beta test cycle for ESET Smart Security will run until the program reaches the necessary levels of quality, performance and reliability.

Q6: What happens at the end of the beta test program?
A6: At the end of the beta test program, a message will be sent to testers who provided a contact email address letting them know the exact date the beta test version ceases to work. If you did not provide contact information, you will only receive notifications through ESET Smart Security as to when the beta test version's license has expired.

Q7: How do I provide feedback on ESET Smart Security?
A7: There are three ways to contact ESET in order to report a bug, request a feature or ask a question regarding ESET Smart Security:

  • From within ESET Smart Security, select Help → Contact Technical Support from the main menu.
  • Write a message in the ESET Beta Forum.
  • Send email to betasupport@eset.sk.
Please keep in mind that ESET may not respond to your report unless additional information is required in order to replicate the problem.

Beta 2 Questions

Q1: Does ESET Smart Security work with Microsoft Windows Server 2008?
A1: At the time of release, Windows Server 2008 is still in development by Microsoft. Some builds of Windows Server 2008 may work with ESET Smart Security while others do not as Microsoft makes changes to this new operating system version. More information about Windows Server 2008 will be available around the time the operating system is released by Microsoft.

Beta 1 Questions

Q1: How do I install the beta under Microsoft Windows Vista?
A1: In order to install ESET Smart Security under Microsoft Windows Vista, you must be logged as an Administrator or run the installer by right-clicking on it and selecting Run as Administrator from the popup context menu.

Q2: What will be changed in the next beta test version?
A2: Each subsequent beta test version of ESET Smart Security will contain fixes to reported problems as well as new features and new functionality.

Q3: Where are the versions for other operating systems?
A3: Support for additional 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) operating systems will be added throughout the course of the beta test program

Q4: Why wasn't the bug I reported fixed in the next beta?
A4: ESET prioritizes bug fixes based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, the severity of a bug, how often it occurs, conditions under which the bug occurs, number of affected customers and so forth. While each bug report received by ESET is reviewed and examined, it may not always be possible to fix them promptly due to lack of reproducibility, lack of detail in the initial report and so forth.

Q5: Why is ESET Smart Security is missing a feature that NOD32 v2.70 had?
A5: Public Beta 1 of ESET Smart Security is a precursor to the final version and does not have the full functionality or documentation of the final, production version. It is intended for experienced users and should not be installed on computers used for critical tasks.

Here is a partial list of features which are unavailable in Public Beta 1:

  • no support for Remote Administrator
  • no context menu integration
  • real-time scanner does not support exclusions
If you require one or more of these features you should not use ESET Smart Security Public Beta 1.

Q6: What are the system requirements for ESET Smart Security?
A6: At the current time, the system requirements for ESET Smart Security have not been finalized. We are determining what these will be based on performance results from our test lab and customer reports. ESET's other programs typically perform excellently on modest systems and this was a design goal for ESET Smart Security, however, it is likely system requirements will be increased slightly because of ESET Smart Security has more features and functionality than NOD32.

Q7: I was unable to install ESET Smart Security. Is there a way to troubleshoot this?
A7: The installation program for ESET Smart Security can create a log file which can be sent to us to help determine why the program would not install. To create a log file, open a Command Prompt (filename: CMD.EXE), change to the directory containing the installer for ESET Smart Security and type "ess_nt32_enu.msi /lvx* report.log" and send the log file along with a description of the issue via email to send the log file along with an issue description to betasupport@eset.sk.
