AV-TEST.ORG STUDY CONFIRMS ESET’S NOD32 PROACTIVELY IDENTIFIED ALL WIN32/ZOTOB VARIANTS; ESET BEATS INDUSTRY’S LARGEST ANTIVIRUS COMPANIES

Proactive ThreatSense™ technology from ESET keeps users protected ahead of the curve; signature-based solutions from leading companies unable to catch worms in advance

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – (September 1, 2005) – ESET, a global security software solutions company providing next-generation anti-threat protection, today announced results from a study conducted by AV-Test.org that confirm ESET’s NOD32 proactively identified all six variants of the recent WIN32/Zotob worm. The findings, which appeared on August 22, 2005, clearly showcase the importance of implementing a proactive anti-threat solution as the industry’s major antivirus players including Symantec, Trend Micro and McAfee did not detect all variants of the worm until after they had hit systems around the globe.

The independent testing institution AV-Test.org, an antivirus research project at the Institute of Technical and Business Information Systems at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg (Germany) measured the detection times for six of the WIN32/Zotob variants—WIN32/Zotob.A through WIN32/Zotob.F. The worms were all released within a week, and all exploited the MS05-039 Plug and Play vulnerability. More details can be found at http://www.av-test.org. The results show that ESET detected all six of the variants in real-time, while other leading software vendors including Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro and Kaspersky took hours to develop and disseminate signature updates.

“Near-zero day attacks such as the recent WIN32/Zotob outbreak, coupled with the results of this study from AV-Test.org highlight the importance of proactive malware protection,” said Andrew Lee, chief technology officer of ESET. “As seen from the test, by the time vendors released patches or signatures after-the-fact, thousands of systems were compromised. ESET’s ThreatSense technology detected the worm proactively and customers were protected from WIN32/Zotob before their systems were infected.”

NOD32 utilizes ThreatSense technology, a sophisticated detection system based on advanced heuristics, to proactively identify previously-unknown malware in real-time.  ThreatSense is built into NOD32’s single, unified scanning engine to provide comprehensive protection so users do not need to rely on additional point solutions for spyware and adware protection.  Additionally, network and CPU performance is barely affected for end-users and IT administrators as NOD32 uses less than 20 MB of memory.
