ESET Announces Support for Windows 7

ESET, the leader in proactive threat protection, has announced full support of the Microsoft® Windows 7® operating system. The complete line of ESET products - ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 and ESET Smart Security 4 (home and business editions), Remote Administrator 3, SysInspector and ESET Online Scanner are fully compatible with Microsoft’s new operating system.

According to Richard Marko, Chief Technology Officer at ESET, the changes that needed to be made in the products were minor and concerned mainly those features that are closely linked with the core of the OS, namely ESET’s Self-defense and Anti-stealth technologies. Self-defense is a function that prevents computer infiltrations from deactivating or negatively affecting the computer’s security status. Anti-stealth is advanced technology that ESET has developed against rootkits.

In order to ensure full compatibility with Windows 7 OS, ESET recommends that its clients download the newest installation package for ESET Smart Security 4 and ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4, as well as the Business Edition versions running ESET Remote Administrator 3. Upon downloading the above-mentioned updates, it is recommended the product be re-installed.

How demanding was getting ESET solutions to the stage of being fully compatible with Windows 7 OS and what needed to be done?

Windows 7 is based on the Windows Vista platform, which has been supported by ESET products for quite some time now. Therefore the changes that needed to be made were quite small and concerned those areas that are closely tied to the core of the OS, namely the Self-defense and Anti-Stealth technologies. However, Windows 7 brings with it some new network services, which impacts on the functionality of the Personal Firewall in that the rules need to be expanded.

Is Windows 7 an Operating System that is more secure compared to its predecessors? How is its security complemented by ESET?

The Windows Vista OS introduced several changes with an aim to improve the overall security of the OS. However, some of these changes had quite the opposite effect because the users simply deactivated some important defense mechanisms. Windows 7 aims to prevent such situations and improve the overall user experience. ESET solutions provide a high level of protection against malware.

What does the Chief Software Architect think about Windows 7?

Whenever new functionality is added to an already complex software product - such as the operating system - it usually takes some time for fine tuning and for the users to get used to it. Later, the manufacturers usually realease a new product version that no longer exhibits these initial glitches. I think that Windows 7 is in this sense a successor to Vista, which has had a lukewarm reception at best. Only time will tell if Windows 7 will fare better in this regard.
