Viruses on my Mac?
"The statistics clearly prove that Mac OS X is no different from other operating systems. Any system needs to be updated and carefully managed to be secure."
— Thomas Kristensen, CSO of Secunia Research
Just one year ago, Mac users made up 9 percent of the computer-owning households in the U.S. Now we account for 12 percent. Good news for Apple, bad news for us. Why?
Now that Mac users make up a significant market share, we're an appealing target for cybercriminals. The idea of viable Mac OS X malware — laughable three or four years ago — is now a reality.
RSPlug/DNSChanger: On the radar since late 2007, this ported Windows Zlob trojan tricks users into downloading malicious code posing as a video codec for Active X. By changing your DNS server, it forces you to visit phishing sites in hopes of harvesting usernames, passwords and credit card information. Learn more — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSPlug
Jahlav/MacAccess: By gathering information and sending it to a remote IP and installing a backdoor that executes via a scheduling task, Jahlav is capable of remotely executing software without the Mac user's knowledge.
OSX_LAMZEV.A: Disguised as a legitimate application download since 2008, this file creates a backdoor in your Dock settings library that can allow attackers to gain remote access to your system.
Krowi: Posing as pirated applications on peer-to-peer sites since early 2009, Krowi installs a bot that attempts to contact http servers — and if successful, gives a remote botnet controller nearly unlimited control of the infected Mac.
iWorkServices: Like Krowi, iWorkServices hides in pirated copies of Apple software (iWork 09) offered for illegal download on BitTorrent sites in early 2009. The file contains a working copy of iWork and a trojan intended to compromise your system.
Tored: The Tored worm, written in RealBasic, attempts to compromise your system and use it in a botnet and gather email addresses and send itself to your contacts. Though Tored was hampered by code bugs, it concept-proofed the involuntary spread of Mac worms.Macs are only getting more popular — and the malware is generating money for cybercriminals, so they're writing more. To address the problem, Apple releases an ever-growing number of security patches for OS X each month — and the criticality of each is increasing.

Cross-platform protection
Gone are the days of being solely a Windows or Mac OS office. Chances are you use both — often on the same machine. Threats are evolving to match this multiplatform world and you need proactive protection that you can manage easily.

Using Remote Administrator, you can push out installations, monitor or modify protection and repair infections — all from an intuitive central console. Set up a mirror to lighten server loads. Add and delete clients easily. And best of all, Remote Administrator 4 can manage all your systems together: your Macs and PCs — a huge time-saver for heterogeneous networks with antivirus compliance requirements.
If you're running both Windows and Mac OS in Boot Camp, Parallels or VMWare, ESET offers proactive detection for all your platforms under one roof. You can be confident that no threat can travel through your Boot Camp partition or VM shared folders.
ESET Antivirus for Mac is the faster, smarter, more adaptive solution to malicious Internet threats like spyware and trojans. By sandboxing suspicious code in a controlled setting, ESET prevents infection. And because ESET's advanced heuristic technology uses what it knows about existing threats to identify new ones, you'll never be slowed down by sluggish scans or hefty signature updates.
Faster, smarter, lighter
Your Mac was born fast and elegant — finally there's an Internet security solution that keeps it that way. Multiplatform threats are evolving every day, so you need a lightweight, adaptive protection to keep you ahead of the curve.
