Following an article I wrote recently for SC Magazine, Martijn Grooten of Virus Bulletin, who shares my interest in and dislike of support desk scams, contacted me about the web site associated with eFIX, a company claiming to offer online technical support. He and I, along with Steven Burn, who has a great deal of experience of working in this area, have been able to dig out some interesting info. on a slightly different aspect of flaky support desk operations.eFIX’s web page lists an office in Glasgow under the name eFIX Ltd, at 8901 Marmora Road, Glasgow, D04 89GR.

October Threats: Mac hit by a small Tsunami; removable media malware tops ESET Live Grid Statistics

Last month, ESET’s research team has discovered a new threat, which was originally designed for Linux, that now can infect Mac OS X. This is a modification of Linux code originally called Linux/Tsunami and currently detected as OSX/Tsunami.A. In more malware news, the removable media oldtimers like INF/Autorun and Win32/Conficker still appear on top spots both in Europe and globally. However, backdoor Dorkbot has moved up to number two spot worldwide with a 3.12% infection rate. Statistics are based on ESET Live Grid data, cloud-based reputation technology that utilizes malware related data from users of ESET solutions worldwide.

ESET Partners with OPSWAT through Metascan Online to Increase Malware Detection

OPSWAT and ESET today announced that ESET’s antivirus scanning engine will now be included in OPSWAT’s Metascan Online. The partnership will help to improve Metascan Online, by including the malware detection capabilities of the ESET engine to the site's scanning process. In turn, OPSWAT will provide ESET with malware samples from the files uploaded to Metascan Online. With the help of thousands of samples a day, ESET has yet another means of identifying newly emerging threats and potential false positives.
