Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano Gives National Honor to ESET's Securing Our eCity
ESET's Securing Our eCity, a public-private initiative designed to counter the rapidly-growing wave of cybercriminal activity, today announced that it was honored by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt as the "Best Local/Community Plan" along with MyMaine Privacy for the administration's 2010 National Cybersecurity Awareness Challenge. President Obama also attended the event.
Securing Our eCity was selected from more than 80 proposals received by DHS for this inaugural competition, which called on members of public and private communities to develop innovative approaches to increase awareness of the importance of cybersecurity and to create a plan to safeguard America's cyber infrastructure from attacks. As a winner, Securing Our eCity will help inform the National Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign, which was announced in March by Secretary Napolitano. The goal of the Campaign is to engage the public, private and government sectors to work together to guard against cyber threats and communicate strategies to better educate the American public on how to keep themselves safer online. The campaign will kick off in October as part of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
"Everyone has a stake in cybersecurity, and everyone has a role to play in keeping our networks safe," said Secretary Napolitano. "The winners of the Cybersecurity Awareness Challenge are being recognized for their unique, innovative ideas to raise public awareness about one of our nation's most pressing security threats."
Spearheaded by ESET, the Securing Our eCity initiative was developed as a way to educate and protect consumers and businesses from the growing threat of cybercrime. With 200 stakeholders representing all sectors of the San Diego community, it offers foundational workshops, educational events and resources for citizens to create a more cyber-secure San Diego.
"This award is a testament to how seriously the city of San Diego takes the security of its citizens, both on the streets and online," said San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. "We are committed to the goal of making San Diego the most cybersecure city in the nation and a model for the rest of the country to follow."
"Cybersecurity and protecting our families, businesses and governments from near constant digital threats is one of our nation's greatest challenges," said Congressman Brian Bilbray, R-CA. "Through this award, the Department of Homeland Security has recognized ESET's Securing Our eCity for its innovative and holistic approach to addressing the challenge of cybersecurity while bolstering our regional economic development. I congratulate them for the well-deserved award and commend them for the work they are doing on behalf of the city of San Diego."
"This award is really being given to the City of San Diego and the 200-plus stakeholders involved in the Securing Our eCity initiative," said Darin Andersen, COO, ESET. "We are excited to work closely with the Campaign and be on the front lines as it crafts the world's most complete cybersecurity education and awareness program."
