Win32/Bagle.AH

Win32/Bagle.AH is a worm spreading in the form of a file in the attachment of an e-mail, shared files and via P2P networks.

Note: In following text a symbolic inscription %windir% is used instead of the name of directory in which Windows operating system is installed. Of course, this may differ from installation to installation. The subdirectory System or System32 placed in %windir% has a name %system%.

The worm arrives with a Subject line: "Re".

The message attachment is the worm Win32/Bagle.AH in an executable file or compressed in a password protected ZIP file. The attachment file name is one of the following:

MP3
Music_MP3
New_MP3_Player
Cool_MP3
Doll
Garry
Cat
Dog
Fish

The executable file has one of the following extensions: ".exe", ".scr", ".com" or".cpl". If the attached file is not password protected the message body contains one of the following strings:

>foto3 and MP3
>fotogalary and Music
>fotoinfo
>Lovely animals
>Animals
>Predators
>The snake
>Screen and Music

If the attached file is password protected, the message body contains one of the following texts:

Password: <password>
Pass - <password>
Key - <password>

The password in the message body could be embedded in a picture, which makes it impossible for anti-virus applications to open the attached ZIP file.

Upon execution Win32/Bagle.AH copies itself into the %system% directory under the name "winxp.exe". In the same directory the worm also creates the following files "winxp.exeopen" and "winxp.exeopenopen".
To make sure the worm will be activated upon computer restart it changes the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run by adding a new entry called "key" and sets its value to: "%system%\winxp.exe".

At the same time clears the following entries from the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run:

The worm searches the local disk for directories containing "shar" in their name. When it finds those directories it copies itself into them under one of the following names:

Microsoft Office 2003 Crack, Working!.exe
Microsoft Windows XP, WinXP Crack, working Keygen.exe
Microsoft Office XP working Crack, Keygen.exe
Porno, sex, oral, anal cool, awesome!!.exe
Porno Screensaver.scr

XXX hardcore images.exe
WinAmp 6 New!.exe
WinAmp 5 Pro Keygen Crack Update.exe
Adobe Photoshop 9 full.exe
Matrix 3 Revolution English Subtitles.exe
ACDSee 9.exe

This technique enables it to spread in the P2P networks and in LAN through shared folders. Win32/Bagle.AH harvests e-mail addresses for it's spreading in files on the local disk with the following extentions:

.txt
.msg
.htm
.shtm
.stm
.xml
.dbx
.mbx

It avoids e-mail addresses containing one of the following strings:

Win32/Bagle.AH is one of a long series of worms that NOD32 detects using a unique "Advanced Heuristics", which means that all NOD32 users are protected against this worm from the time it was released in the wild. The detection of Win32/Bagle.AH using sample is added since version 1.817 .
