“Privacy a MUST in the digital health revolution,” says ESET at Healthcare Data Privacy Day

ESET®, a global pioneer in proactive internet security protection, today underlines the importance of privacy in healthcare. As new pioneering technologies emerge, how we monitor and treat health issues will soon be unrecognisable. ESET are committed to exploring the privacy implications at every step of this digital revolution in healthcare.
ESET Security Researcher Stephen Cobb will be on a panel entitled “Health Privacy in a Fully Connected World” at the Healthcare Data Privacy Day event on Wednesday January 28 at the Academy of Medicine at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

“Medical identity theft is already a multi-billion problem in America alone, and can itself be life threatening,” said Stephen Cobb, ESET Security Researcher. “Networked mobile devices offer great potential for wellness and tele-medicine, and may be even be life-saving, but the technical and human challenges of protecting the privacy and security of the data and systems involved is huge.”

By 2020, the entire concept of how medicine is practiced will change. Data collected from ingestibles, wearables and our DNA will be used to chart who we are and drive healthcare decisions. The challenge will be balancing the loss of autonomy, the increased opportunity for longevity against the very basic right for privacy. No one wants this most personal and private data to get into the wrong hands.
Hosted by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), the Healthcare Data Privacy Day event will explore the future of healthcare privacy and the trajectory of pioneering technologies that are changing the industry. Panelists will discuss the challenge of achieving the healthcare benefits and innovation associated with this new technology, while assuring privacy and data security.
Data Privacy Day (DPD) is an international effort centered on respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust. It commemorates the January 28, 1981, signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. Data Privacy Day is observed annually on January 28.
