TORONTO, May 11, 2022 – ESET, a global digital security company, is thrilled to announce that Nasreen Mir and Anushka Khare have been selected as the winners of ESET Canada’s Second Annual Women in Cybersecurity Scholarship.
Designed to help address the underrepresentation of women in the cybersecurity field, the Annual Women in Cybersecurity Scholarship grants $5,000 to an outstanding graduate/undergraduate woman majoring in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field of study. ESET Canada expanded the program this year to make room for two winners.
Nasreen Mir from Mississauga, Ontario is an early high school graduate and plans to attend Queen’s University in the fall, pursuing a Bachelor of Computing. In addition to maintaining excellent academic standards throughout her high-school career, Nasreen founded a Girls Cybersecurity Club in order to recruit and encourage her female peers to learn more about cybersecurity and participate in a National Girls Go CyberStart competition.
“Providing girls like myself a chance to gain skills in a growing area that could assist them in the future has been a highlight,” says Mir. “My goal is to drive progress in the world by building applications that are inclusive and cater to everyone, not just majority groups. I also want to work on services that already exist to increase security while also making them more inclusive.”
Anushka Khare from Calgary, Alberta is a third year student at the University of Alberta completing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. A recipient of the University of Alberta Deans Research Award, co-president of the STEM Fellowship, co-founder of a peer-to-peer rental start-up and creator of an app that helps improve the technology that Alzheimer’s patients use, Anushka has dedicated her free time to taking her computer engineering skills and knowledge for the betterment of society, by focusing on problems that affect her peers the most.
“A sense of passion to solve the problems around me has driven me to pursue an education in STEM. ” says Khare. “My business learnings have allowed me to develop a keen awareness to the importance of cybersecurity when evaluating the vulnerabilities that protrude during the development of my online business and other application productions. I want to contribute to the community around me by solving challenges and building connections whether that is through applications, my volunteering commitments, or sharing my knowledge with others.”

Not only do they have a passion for STEM and cybersecurity, they’re already embodying what it is to be a conduit of progress in a world of technology,” said Celeste Blodgett, vice president of human resources at ESET. “We received a number of impressive and highly qualified applicants this year, and at the end of the day, the winners’ confidence, passion for the sciences, and their ability to turn dreams into reality is what solidified the selection process.”
Applicants were asked to complete an essay and include a letter of recommendation. More information on the qualifying process can be found here. In Canada, students can pursue a cybersecurity education at 47 colleges and 24 universities.

ESET Canada annonce la sélection de Nasreen Mir et Anushka Khare comme lauréates de la deuxième bourse annuelle pour les femmes en cybersécurité.
ESET, leader mondial en sécurité informatique, est heureux d'annoncer que Nasreen Mir et Anushka Khare ont été sélectionnées comme les gagnantes de la deuxième édition canadienne des bourses d'études annuelles Women in Cybersecurity d’ESET.
Lancée afin d’aider à remédier à la sous-représentation des femmes dans le domaine de la cybersécurité, la bourse d'études annuelle Women in Cybersecurity accorde 5 000 $ à une étudiante remarquable présentement au premier cycle ou aux cycles supérieurs dans un domaine des STIM (science, technologie, ingénierie et mathématiques). Cette année, ESET Canada a étendu le programme en sélectionnant deux lauréates.
Nasreen Mir, de Mississauga en Ontario, a obtenu son diplôme d'études secondaires en avance et prévoit débuter ses études à l'Université Queen’s à l'automne, avec une spécialisation en informatique. En plus d’avoir maintenu d'excellents résultats scolaires tout au long de sa scolarité, Nasreen a fondé un club de cybersécurité pour filles, le Girls Cybersecurity Club, afin de recruter et d'encourager ses consœurs à en apprendre davantage sur la cybersécurité. Le club a d’ailleurs participé au concours national Girls Go CyberStart.
« Offrir aux filles comme moi la possibilité d'acquérir des compétences dans un domaine en pleine expansion qui pourrait les aider à l'avenir est fondamental à mes yeux », souligne Mir. « Mon objectif est de faire progresser le monde en créant des applications qui sont inclusives et s'adressent à tout le monde, pas seulement aux groupes majoritaires. Je veux aussi travailler sur des services qui existent déjà pour en accroître la sécurité tout en les rendant plus inclusifs. »
Anushka Khare, de Calgary en Alberta, est étudiante en troisième année à l'Université de l'Alberta, où elle poursuit un baccalauréat en génie informatique. Récipiendaire de la bourse de recherche des doyens de l'Université de l'Alberta, coprésidente de la STEM Fellowship, cofondatrice d'une start-up de location entre pairs et créatrice d'une application qui aide à améliorer la technologie utilisée par les patients atteints de la maladie d'Alzheimer, Anushka consacre son temps libre à mettre ses compétences et ses connaissances en génie informatique au service de la société, en se concentrant sur les problèmes qui touchent le plus ses pairs.
Elle explique : « Ma passion pour la résolution des problèmes qui m'entourent m'a poussée à poursuivre une éducation en STIM. », explique Khare. « Mes connaissances en affaires m'ont permis de développer une conscience aiguë de l'importance de la cybersécurité lors de l'évaluation des vulnérabilités qui ressortent lors du développement de mon activité en ligne et d'autres productions d'applications. Je veux contribuer à la communauté qui m'entoure en résolvant des problèmes et en créant des liens, que ce soit par le biais d'applications, de mes engagements bénévoles ou du partage de mes connaissances avec les autres. »
